Ham and Yam Festival offers plenty of ham biscuits, sweet potatoes this weekend

The annual Ham and Yam festival will offer family fun and lots of food this weekend in Smithfield.

The annual event will feature two stages of entertainment, inflatables, and plenty of ham biscuits and sweet potatoes. It is happening Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 200 S. Front St.

Johnston County 4-H’s "What’s That Yam Thing?" contest presented by WRAL is an opportunity for school-aged children to turn sweet potatoes into works of art. WRAL reporter Brett Knese will be judging the competition at 10 a.m. with winners expected to be announced around 11 a.m.

You can also catch Knese at the WRAL booth at the corner of Johnston and Second streets, next to the “Kids’ Area.” Visit the WRAL booth for free giveaways while supplies lasts, and to meet WRAL anchor Gerald Owens and Tar Heel Traveler Scott Mason.

WRAL is a proud community partner of this year’s festival.

WRAL booth appearance schedule:

  • 9:30-11:30 a.m.: Brett Knese
  • 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.: Gerald Owens
  • 2-5 p.m.: Scott Mason
