If you’re looking to make a tax-deductible contribution this Giving Tuesday, there are dozens of local non-profits working to fight climate change, address environmental justice, and make the air and water cleaner in our state.

Climate Change Health Impact

CleanAIRE NC advocates for the health of North Carolinians by pursuing equitable and collaborative solutions that address climate change and air pollution. The organization has installed 88 air sensors across the state and has more than 750 doctors and health professionals in its network. Andrew Whelan, communications manager with CleanAIRE NC, says its work would not be possible without individual contributions.

"It powers all the community work that we do to monitor air quality, provide advocacy, education and capacity building resources, and work towards towards finding good policy solutions that will rein in air pollution and climate change," Whelan said.

Cleanaire nc has a special Giving Tuesday promotion today, with an entry to win a Patagonia Black Hole 55L Duffle Bag for every $100 donated.

CleanAIRE NC is also participating in the Target Circle giving campaign from now through the end of December, where people can vote for CleanAIRE NC while shopping at Target to direct a portion of Target's giving to a local organization.

Clean Energy

The North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association is a non-profit currently fundraising to defend and expand clean energy in the state. NCSEA works with its members and partners to transform our state and region's energy system through market innovation and policy advocacy primarily in ten clean energy technology sectors: alternative fuel vehicles (primarily electric vehicles), biogas, energy efficiency, energy storage, geothermal, hydropower/marine, smart grid, solar, and wind.

"Some of the most economically distressed areas in the state stand to benefit the most from some of the clean energy projects deployed here in North Carolina," Matt Abele with NCSEA said.

Environmental Justice

The Durham Community Land Trust is working to make affordable housing more accessible, with a number of sustainable housing projects in the works to cut emissions and save residents money.

"Funding allows these communities that have been underserved and disinvested for so long to be able to thrive," said Sherry Taylor with DCLT. "We are thinking about communities in a more collaborative way because it's not just about the housing. It's not just about the air that we breathe or being climate resilient. It's about all of it."

Broad Impact

EarthShare NC is a coalition of 27 environmental non-profits across the state, with projects from coast restoration, to trash clean up, to expanding urban farms.

"It is a way to touch the broad cross section of needs related to the environment with one gift," said Heather Beard with EarthShare NC. "The reality is that we all have to have a role in climate and solutions, and so our job with this is going to be to make it easy and empower everyone to take those steps."
