American Red Cross responds to blood shortage

As the blood shortage reaches dire levels at local hospitals, the American Red Cross is offering some enticing new incentives to get people to donate.

The supply at Cape Fear Valley Health is the lowest it has been in 50 years, officials say, and the American Red Cross supply is at its lowest level in 10 years.

The supply at UNC Health is lower than in years past, but the hospital hasn't had to cancel or postpone any surgeries.

"While the blood supply is lower than in years past and increased donor activity would be a tremendous help, UNC Health is being mindful of what is available," said spokesperson Alan Wolf.

A spokesperson from Duke Health said the hospital is receiving 50% of what it usually receives due to the shortage. The most critical need at Duke is for type O blood.

“We’re having difficulty with access and challenges to get the blood supply up before we get to the holiday season," said Red Cross spokesperson Barry Porter. "That’s why we’re pushing the message now ... it’s low, it’s critical. It’s not the Red Cross that needs blood. Hospital patients do.”

Beginning next week, if you donate blood to the American Red Cross, you'll get a $10 Amazon gift card and be entered to win a trip to Hawaii. Organizers are hopeful this will help boost the blood supply.

When you donate blood, you can track where it went and how you helped through the American Red Cross app. You can also donate through The Blood Connection, which pops up in parking lots across the Triangle area.
