Fire in Sanford after gas line ruptured

A major gas line was ruptured in Sanford on Tuesday afternoon, leading to a large fire that forced some people out of their homes.

The fire occurred in the area of Hawkins Avenue and McNeill Road, just north of downtown.

Video sent to WRAL News showed large flames and plumes of smoke rising into the sky around 4:30 p.m.

A Dominion Energy spokesperson said a natural gas line was struck by a third party who was doing work in the area around 4 p.m. Dominion stopped the flow of gas around 5 p.m.

Some who live in the immediate area were asked to leave their homes as a precaution.

No one was injured, but several vehicles were damaged.
