Family starts foundation in honor of UNC student killed in car crash

On Sunday, the family of a UNC student killed in a car crash told WRAL News they are using the tragedy to put others first.

Elijah Jayden Hawkins-Maynor died in October after a car hit him and three other passengers while driving on Page Road in Chapel Hill.

Authorities charged Nyasia Palmer with second-degree murder in Hawkins-Maynor’s death.

In November, his family decided to use his tragedy to help others.

“My husband said, ‘Let’s create the Elijah scholarship,’” Rosalind Reddick, his mother, said.

Shortly after, the family founded the The Elijah Jayden Hawkins Maynor Foundation.

According to Reddick, the foundation will provide students with scholarships and assistance to those struggling to make ends meet.

[It’s[ built on four pillars: academic achievement, mentorship, community outreach and benevolence,” Reddick explained.

According to the foundation's website, its vision is to "empower, elevate and encourage" people who dream of a better life and world for themselves, as well as others.

"We believe this vision is imperative if we are to create a better society where everyone is valued and respected," The foundation website says. "The Elijah Jayden Hawkins Maynor Foundation will serve as a beacon of hope for the dismayed, light for the lost and possibilities for those who dream of a better tomorrow."

Reddick says the work at the foundation helps her and the family focus on the positive instead of the court proceedings.

When asked how they put others first during this time, Reddick responded with two answers: Elijah and God.
