A former chairwoman of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce was released from federal prison Friday after serving almost six years for fraud.

Carolyn Grant, 69, pleaded guilty in November 2012 to mail fraud in connection with a real-estate investment scam. She most recently was serving time at a halfway house in Butner.

Prosecutors said she lied to investors, telling them their money was used on real estate projects when it was used for her personal and business expenses and to repay other investors.

She bilked more than 65 people of nearly $13.6 million. Although U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle ordered her to make restitution, he said at her sentencing that he didn't think victims would "get even a penny."

Jim Good, one of the fraud victims, called Grant an "accomplished liar, cheat and thief," saying he had entrusted her with his retirement money.

Grant ran unsuccessfully for Raleigh mayor in 1999 and Congress in 2002.
