Morehead Planetarium and Science Center's Teen Cafe series will explore a couple of popular topics this Friday when it dives into Harry Potter and the Genetics of the Wizarding World.

Duke Biology Professor Eric Spana will lead the discussion. He's traveled around the country giving similar talks to high schools, colleges, fan conventions and the Smithsonian Institution. He'll follow up Friday's session with another Teen Science Cafe in the new year that focuses on Captain America.

Here's a description of the event from Morehead's website that covers both talks:

"When over a half a BILLION copies of Harry Potter books have been sold, and over one half of young adults have seen movies starring The Avengers, it is safe to say Science Fiction and Fantasy media fills a spot in many people’s lives. These stories are familiar to many, but how science fits into these stories may not have been obvious to everyone. and Dr. Spana is ready to help. He can’t explain how magic use works in the Harry Potter Universe, but he can explain where Muggle-borns and Squibs come from."

Friday's Harry Potter-themed discussion starts at 5:30 p.m. with pizza or some other snack, followed by the program at 6 p.m. It runs for about an hour to 90 minutes. It's free and designed for teens ages 13 to 18.
