US Postal Service struggles to fill vacant positions

Following success in Wake Forest, the United States Postal Service is holding a job fair Aug. 9 in Chapel Hill.

After having zero people at a previous job fair, a manager at the USPS in Wake Forest said they had 125 applicants at Wednesday event.

The Chapel Hill USPS says they're looking to fill rural carrier associate, city carrier assistant and assistant rural carrier positions. Pay for the positions starts at $18.92 an hour. The job fair will be from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 125 S. Estes Dr.

Currently, to fill the gaps, some Wake Forest carriers are working six days a week. They're also passing out flyers on their route to let others know they need help.

"It is sad, especially because people wanted to work for civil service at one time," said Wake Forest resident Stephanie Rabby.

USPS is looking for drivers, carriers and customer support.

Rabby said the agency could use some help.

"I will mail a letter — it won’t get there for five or six days. It used to be two," she said.

Last week, residents in a Fayetteville neighborhood said they went a week without mail. Postal workers told WRAL News mail delivery there was about three weeks behind.

USPS said part of the reason for the shortage is because people are retiring, workers getting promoted and positions are not being filled. That has turned into an extra day of work each week for those who deliver mail.

"Any time there is staffing issues, we try to alleviate any extra hours. Some people like overtime. We try to bring in carriers from other stations and give customers the service they expect," said Paul Smith, with USPS.

The job fair will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Some of the jobs start at $19.50.
