Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff on Friday.

The honor is meant to recognize Fort Bragg Spc. Abigail Jenks, who passed away on April 19 during a training exercise.

Jenks was part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Spc. Jenks day of interment is May 2.

Additionally, North Carolina flags are asked to be flown at half-staff until further notice in honor of two deputies who were killed in a shooting stemming from a standoff in Boone on Wednesday. Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox, both Watauga County deputies, died of the line of duty when responding to a home for a welfare check.

Sgt. Ward had worked in law enforcement since 2013. K-9 Deputy Fox served at the Watauga County Sheriff's Office for two years.

“These horrific shootings that claimed lives and loved ones show the ever-present danger law enforcement can encounter in the line of duty," said Gov. Cooper. "I have talked with Sheriff Len Hagaman to offer condolences and additional assistance.”

Businesses, schools and other municipalities in the state are encouraged to fly their flags at half-staff as well.
