Fla. Sheriff: Teen shot, killed mother, wounded another man

Deputies in Hillsborough County, Florida say a teenager shot and killed his mother and critically wounded her boyfriend Saturday.

According to deputies, the shooting happened about 16 miles east of Tampa.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said the shooting happened around 4 p.m. Saturday.

“The scene is one that nightmares are made of,” Chronister said during a press conference outside the home.

The Sheriff said the 14-year-old shot his mother and her boyfriend five times and attempted to shoot his older brother when deputies arrived at the home.

The older brother was not hurt.

Chronister said his team attempted to “de-escalate the situation” after the teen pointed the gun at his head several times.

After 16 minutes of negotiations and the use of a 40mm launcher projectile, a less lethal form of gaining compliance, Chronister said the teen was taken into custody.

"This family's lives have been changed forever,” Chronister said. “They lost a mother. This mother's life is over and when I tell you that this is one of nightmares, this is heartbreaking."

Authorities took the mother’s boyfriend to Tampa General Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition and sedated.
