Five options for you-pick flowers across central North Carolina

Springtime has finally arrived in central North Carolina and seasonal activities have begun. While there's dozens of options for picking your own strawberries and strawberries, there's also several options for picking your own flowers.

You-pick flower season begins soon in central NC

Springtime has finally arrived in central North Carolina and seasonal activities have begun. While there's dozens of options for picking your own strawberries and strawberries, there’s also several options for picking your own flowers.

Firefly Farm

Firefly Farm,Firefly Farm located at 4911 Hunt Road in Hillsborough, you-pick season begins on May 7. Once you-pick season begins, it will be open Wednesday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors can pick from several patches of flowers. Before heading to the farm, purchase a flower session ticket that can be used at anytime during.

The farm will provide all supplies for picking the flowers, but visitors are asked to bring a bucket of water to put flowers in for the ride home.

Persimmon Hill Farm

Persimmon Hill Farm's you-pick season is expected to begin in mid-June. The farm is located 105 Persimmon Hill Lane in Cedar Grove next to Cedar Grove Blueberries, a you-pick blueberry farm, and Botanist and Barrel, which creates cider, fruited sours and wines.

Visitors will receive a vase, which is $15, and will be loaned scissors to cut flowers with. However, visitors who come with their own quart-sized vase will receive a $1 discount.

The farm also allows visitors to pick as many flowers as they would like.

Hours vary so be sure to check the farm's website before heading out.

Tailgate Farm

Tailgate Farm, located at 2610 Olive Branch Road in Durham, will have you-pick blueberries, blackberries and flowers this summer.

In addition, the farm has a sunflower field for visitors to take pictures in and vegetables can be purchased from the farm stand.

Tailgate Farm started in 2016 when the first phase of blueberries were planted. The farm then opened in 2020 for its first you-pick season, and continues to expand for this upcoming summer.

Fernrock Farm

Fernrock Farm is a two-acre farm located at 4500 Orange Grove Road in Hillsborough. Some of the flowers grown at the farm include daffodils, zinnias, daisies and black eyed Susans.

The farm also has a program for "serious flower lovers" where visitors can come four times during the season. The program includes pre-schedule morning sessions, a tour and orientation at the first session to keep the flowers lasting longer, a flower bucket and a bonus visit in October.

The farm also offers classes which can include container gardening and starting a cutting garden.

Lavender Oaks Farm

Lavender Oaks Farm, which features over 4,000 lavender plants, is located at 3833 Millard Whitley Road in Chapel Hill. The farm's opening day is slated for June 1 and will remain open through July.

There is a $5 fee for visitors, and visitors are asked to bring scissors to cut their lavender.

The farm grows nine varieties of lavender. Hours vary, especially based on weather and private events, so be sure to double check the farm's Facebook page before heading out.
