First look: High-rise apartments at Dix Park

Two new apartment towers will soon rise along the edge of Dix Park.

Raleigh got a first look Thursday at artist renderings of two 20-story apartment buildings that will soon overlook Dix Park.

The Weld development consists of 1,200 apartments in two high-rise buildings on 3.5 acres at Dix Park. The $700 million project, announced earlier this year, is replacing an industrial area and several small homes along Lake Wheeler Road at Hammell Drive.

Developers have already broken ground on the project.

When both phases are complete, the towers will provide a total of 1,200 one, two and three-bedroom apartments that overlook the park.

A press release describes, "The Weld is designed to provide a modern urban lifestyle, offering expansive park views along with restaurant and retail spaces surrounding a central green space that serves as a resident gathering place."

The project sits across Lake Wheeler Road from the Gipson Play Plaza, an 18-acre playground and picnic area, which is also under construction. The Weld is scheduled to be complete in summer of 2025, if all goes according to plan.

Thursday's announcement includes a $500,000 gift from The Weld's developers to the Dix Park Conservancy for a new trail system within the park.

"If we can add some activity along the perimeter of the park – giving it a connection to downtown – then I think it benefits both," said Bryan Kane, SLI Capital President. "It gives people that want to come to the park a place to live or place to eat or grab a coffee, and it gives an awesome amenity for our residents that they’ve got a really large greenspace next door they can take advantage of."
