Crews spend Wednesday morning fighting fire at home in Smithfield

Crews spent Wednesday morning fighting a fire at a home on Longview Drive in Smithfield.

Everyone inside the home was able to get out safely before the entire roof collapsed. However, one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Firefighters spent hours trying to extinguish the fire. You could see crews dumping water into the home on top of the collapsed roof.

The home appeared to be destroyed when Sky 5 flew over the scene.

The Smithfield fire chief said this is a great lesson about the importance of smoke detectors. He said the family may not have been as lucky if their smoke detector hadn't woken them up.
