Fire at Raleigh apartment complex injures firefighter, 4 others

A call was received at 6:12 a.m. Sunday about a fire at an apartment complex at 9401 Prince George Lane in Raleigh.

The fire caused significant damage to eight units.

Five people were transported to the hospital; one of those people was a Raleigh firefighter.

"We had one firefighter who was injured when some of [the] ceiling material came down," said Raleigh Fire Battalion Chief Dena Ali.

Authorities said the firefighter received treatment at the hospital and was released.

No one suffered serious injuries. At least 20 people have been displaced.

After burning for nearly two hours, crews were able to put out the fire after 8 a.m. Firefighters said it took about 30 minutes to put out.

Victims told WRAL News that first responders called to residents to get out of their burning apartment building.

"On the second floor at the end unit, the first arriving companies actually helped pull out four people," Ali said.

When Patrick Schneider ran out of his home, fire was spreading across the roof.

"We heard some sirens and some people yelling outside, and they banged on our door," Schneider said.

Schneider explained how the fire spread.

“You saw a lot of flames coming out over here," Schneider said. "Then, it skirted the attic.”

Sunday morning's fire was one of several scenes firefighters responded to this weekend.

"Last night was definitely unusual," Ali said. We had one captain who mentioned he has never gone to this many in one shift, and he is about to retire.

"It was just an unusual evening."
