Fayetteville woman facing voluntary manslaughter charge in death of 67-year-old woman

A Fayetteville woman was arrested after the mother of her boyfriend was found dead in their home Friday night, police said.

Abigail Marie Tipton, 21, who lived with the victim has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Maria Adame, 67.

The suspect, victim and victim's son all lived together in a home located in the 200 block of South Cool Spring Street, which is about a mile from downtown Fayetteville.

Officers rwere called to the home just after 10:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they found Adame's body.

Investigators said Adame suffered from blunt force trauma injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The two women had apparently argued before the dispute turned physical.

Tipton was being held in the Cumberland County jail under a $100,000 bond.

Her first court date is Monday at 2:30 p.m., according to the Cumberland County Detention Center.

Neighbors originally told reporters that Adame was the mother-in-law of the suspect, but Fayetteville police later confirmed that Tipton and her boyfriend were in a common-law marriage but were not legally married.
