Typically held at the beginning of June, the Beaver Queen Pageant encourages participants to dress up in their favorite beaver personalities including Fur Pelton John, the Beave Whisperer, and Furrabella-Conchita Carramba. The event was first formalized in 2005 to celebrate a successful community effort of the Duke Park neighborhood, who stopped the NC Department of Transportation from eradicating a den of beavers from nearby wetlands.
