Morrisville's Family Fun Festival carries on despite heat, storm potential

Weather threatened to upend the Morrisville Family Fun Festival, but the show and fireworks went on Monday night.

Heat advisories and the threat for severe weather made it unclear if the festival would take place, with the heat index for central North Carolina reaching as high as 106 Monday.

But as the sun went down and storms held off, the crowds turned out.

"It's fun for the whole family," said Wil Glenn, communications director for Morrisville. "It's just time for the family to get out [for] live entertainment [and] food trucks."

Organizers said they warned families to stock up on water and sun protection before coming out.

"We're just telling them to dress lightly, you can bring tents out if you need to," Glenn said. "Wear hats to cover up, those kind of things."

Wake Forest and Garner hosted Independence Day celebrations Monday evening as well. The towns are just a few of the many places across central North Carolina that will be holding fireworks shows to celebrate Independence Day.

Despite the threat of severe weather and intense heat, the Morrisville festival was packed for food, fun and fireworks.

"So, it's pretty humid out here," festival attendee Jayshree Sadhwani said. "Bu anything to celebrate the Fourth of July."

"It's nice to be around people on, you know, Independence Day eve," festival attendee Neeta Shah added.

Families at the festival said they're ready to do it all over again on Tuesday.

There will be a level 1 severe storm risk Tuesday for much of central North Carolina, which may potentially impact festivities happening in the evening.
