Formula One race car commentator and former race car driver Martin Brundle knows his way around a racetrack.
However, Brundle had quite the mix-up during Sky Sports' Sunday coverage of the Formula One Miami Grand Prix on ESPN. Brundle thought he was interviewing Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes when he was actually speaking with NBA prospect Paolo Banchero, who just finished his freshman season at Duke.
Mahomes is 6 feet, 3 inches tall whereas Banchero is 6 feet, 10 inches.
“It’s not Patrick [Mahomes],” Brundle said. "That’s why he ignored me in the beginning.”
Brundle asked Banchero for his name, apologized and shook his hand. Brundle then said “whatever” as he walked away.
During the interview, Brundle asked Banchero what he thought of the atmosphere of the race.
“This is crazy,” Banchero said. “I’ve never been to an F1 race. This is spectacular.”
Brundle also asked Banchero about the drivers ahead of Sunday’s race.
“You can see, they’re locked in,” Banchero said of the drivers. “It reminds me of myself. [They’re] really focused.”
After Sunday's race, Banchero and Mahomes tweeted about Brundle's mix-up.
"I'm [just] vibing right now, man," Banchero tweeted.
"Bro, ain't no way," Mahomes tweeted.
Last month, Banchero declared for the 2022 NBA Draft, which is set for June 23.
