East Rowan High School is looking for a new head football coach for the first time since 2017. Over the weekend, previous head coach John Fitz confirmed with HighSchoolOT that he will not be returning as the head coach of the Mustangs.

Fitz took over the program in 2017 after Kenneth McClamrock led the program from 2014-2016. Fitz's first year saw a 3-8 overall record, but Fitz helped the Mustangs to six wins and a N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A West playoff appearance in 2018. The Mustangs also made the postseason in 2019 under Fitz.

The Mustangs have not made it back to the playoffs since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. East Rowan finished with an 0-10 overall record this fall.

East Rowan competes in the South Piedmont 3A Conference with Carson, Central Cabarrus, Concord, Jay M. Robinson, Northwest Cabarrus, South Rowan, and West Rowan.
