Durham rescue saves pit bull covered in burns

A Durham-based animal rescue is asking for help as they treat a dog with severe burns.

According to a Facebook post by Carolina Adopt-A-Bulls, Zeus was found severely injured with burns all over his body and a shattered hip. The rescue believes that Zeus was mistreated and said the burns appear to be chemical burns.

Zeus has already had one surgery, but treatment for his burns will be a long process, according to the rescue.

Doctors from Triangle Veterinary Hospital in Durham have been giving Zeus hydrotherapy daily by washing away dead skin and bacteria to heal his burns and decrease the risk of infection.

"He has daily treatments. We do have to sedate him because of how much pain he’s in," said Dr. Jessie Watson of Triangle Veterinary Hospital. "He’s doing great. He’s making so much progress. We were able to fix his broken leg. He went to surgery last week."

Jamie Steele with Carolina Adopt-A-Bulls said that, despite his mistreatment, Zeus is loving and sweet.

"He has been in so much pain but is the sweetest thing, giving out kisses to everyone he meets," Steele said.

"It is very emotionally difficult for our staff," Watson added. "There were a lot of tears when he first came, but we just try to be as positive as he can because he can only see our reactions. He’s responded so well.

"He’s such a sweet, sweet dog, and I’m so happy that we’re able to help him," she said.
