Monday at 2 p.m., the Durham Rescue Mission (DRM) is opening Operation RESCUE: Warm Shelter.

DRM is sending out two crews in search of anyone needing shelter and warm food as icy and damp weather moves into the Triangle.

"Cold weather is here, and we are doing what we can to reach out to the homeless and invite them to a warm and comfortable setting at the Durham Rescue Mission," said CEO/President Rev. Rob Tart. "We are asking the community to help us by passing out our 'Bags of Hope.' These are simple bags with items the homeless can use during weather like this."

The bags include things like hand warmers, socks, gloves, water, snacks, an emergency blanket and rain poncho. There's also information about the DRM and how an individual can connect with the resources they need.

Each bag costs about $5, and they can be acquired at DRM thrift stores for a donation of $5.

With nighttime and early morning temperatures set to drop into the teens and 20s, the potential for hypothermia and frostbite is at a high level. Hypothermia and frostbite can set in rapidly and pose an even greater risk for the unprepared and unhomed community.

At the DRM, space will be made to accommodate anyone in need of warm shelter and hot food. The warm shelter will be available until the extremely cold weather is over.
