Durham police join unity march through city

Durham Police Chief C.J. Davis and a few officers joined a group of activists in a march through the city for equality, justice, and unity for all on Monday night.

"I don’t wake up in the morning with this uniform on. On Sunday morning, I’m in church, or on Sunday morning, I’m leading prayer," Davis said. "I understand how important it is to be able to connect with my community.“

The march was organized John Fitzpatrick, the pastor of One Love Christian Church, who hoped to bring unity and support to law enforcement, county leaders and other officials while showing solidarity in light of death of George Floyd.

"Hopefully Hispanics, Blacks, and Caucasians all come together to say we believe the power of prayer, standing against the injustices and let's rise together with love and unity," Fitzpatrick said.

The march began with a prayer at the Durham police headquarters and ended at the Durham County jail where there was another prayer.

Organizers plan to hold another peaceful event in the coming weeks.​
