A Durham man pled guilty to sexually assaulting 14-year-old in the woods more than 10 years ago.

Jordy Russell Quillen, now 39, was 28 at the time of the assault.

Special Victim's Unit Assistant District Attorney Blake Norman said that the girl was walking through the woods with Quillen when he hit her in the back of the head with a hammer multiple times, knocking her unconscious.

She woke up and found Quillen attempting to sexually assault her, officials said.

A sexual assault evidence kit was completed after the attack and the hammer that officials say Quillen used to attack her was tested.

The girl suffered significant head injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to officials.

Quillen was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 18 years.

He was arrested after officials with the Durham Police Department and Durham Crisis Response Center reviewed cold cases and sexual assault kits. So far, this effort has led to 13 people being charged to assaults going back to 1984.

Authorities said that Quillen has already served time. In 2013, he turned himself into the police in South Carolina for sexually assaulting a minor. While talking to the police in 2013, he also informed them of the assault in 2009.
