Flooding Friday bring worries for weekend rain

Residents of Dunn and Erwin are bracing for more rain this weekend and are concerned about the flooding that is becoming increasingly common in these areas.

In Dunn, residents on Merry Street were ankle-deep in water on Friday. They say this flooding is happening more often and call on the town to help them care for their homes.

"We need the town to help us take care of our homes as well," said Bridget Core, Erwin resident. "I don't feel like I should have the beg for help to put in a drain and get the system back in order."

Core has lived in her Erwin home for nearly two decades, and she says that this flooding is far from the worst she has seen. She has called and emailed the Public Works Department for years, but the problem persists.

"You never came down our road. You never acknowledged us when we complain or when we beg for your help," said Core.

Rodney Lanier lives 10 minutes away in Dunn and is running into the same issue. He says the water is high enough to impede traffic and become treacherous.

"It's definitely high enough to stop vehicles; we've had that happen here. We've had vehicles stall on our street. It's definitely a danger to public safety," said Lanier.

He has had vehicles stall on his street, and he believes that the longer this goes unaddressed, the more difficult it will be to fix.

"Infrastructure is so important. This is an issue that won't fix itself; it's one that won't be cheaper to do later. It's one that needs to be done now," said Lanier.

WRAL has reached out to the Public Works Departments for Erwin and Dunn to find out what they have done to address the flooding and what else can be done to help mediate this situation. No responses so far.
