A person died while driving away from police after stealing a car, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

WCNC Charlotte reports the car was stolen around 9 p.m. on Sunday on South Tryon Street near Steele Creek Road. The victim told police that their car had been stolen at gunpoint.

Officers found the car traveling south on I-77 near Carowinds Boulevard shortly after. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver did not stop, according to police.

A police chase began before the driver crashed while attempting to exit on Tyvola Road. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
