Drive-in theaters with family-friendly Christmas movies in December
People want to get out and about safely these days, and a growing number of businesses and groups are offering drive-in movies. Here are some local drive-in movie experiences with family-friendly flicks this month.
Raleigh Road Outdoor Theater
In Henderson, the region's longest running drive-in theater has already been showing lots of holiday favorites and will continue this week with "Krampus" and "Christmas Vacation" on Thursday, Dec. 3, and more plans for holiday movies in December. The theater is open 52 weekends a year. Tickets start at $5 for kids ages 3 to 11 and $8 for adults ages 12 and up.
Pace Family Farms
This Clayton destination is offering Friday Farm Movie Nights through December. Important Update: This is not a drive-in experience. You'll watch the movie on the lawn at the farm. (My apologies for any confusion here.) Parking fees are $15. "Elf" is scheduled for Dec. 11 and "Home Alone" is set for Dec. 18. Check the farm's website for details.
Capital Drive-In
At last check, the Wake Forest was planning movies for December, but hadn't announced them yet. Passes start at $20 per vehicle. Tickets and details are on Capital Drive-In's website.
Charlotte Motor Speedway
If you're up for a drive, Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord will host outdoor movies on what it's calling one of the "biggest HDTVs in the world." The movies, part of the Speedway Christmas drive-thru holiday light show, will be screened on a 16,000-square-foot HDTV. The schedule includes "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," Dec. 3 to Dec. 6; "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," Dec. 10 to Dec. 13;" "Frozen 2," Dec. 17 to Dec. 24; and "A Christmas Story," Dec. 26 and Dec. 27. Tickets are sold per vehicle and start at $20. Concord is just over two hours from Raleigh.
Both Durham and Raleigh's parks departments also are planning outdoor movies this month. Tickets are sold out for most of Raleigh's showtimes. You can get on a waiting list for Durham's showtimes.
