Apply, interview online for thousands of jobs

The WRAL Capital Area Career Expo has always been a big event, connecting people with employers. It started during the Great Recession, when there were more job seekers than open positions.

Post-pandemic, the tables have turned.

"Employers are definitely in the struggle right now," said Brenda Wilkerson with Capital Area Workforce Development.

While the end of extended unemployment benefits prompted some people to look for jobs, "it was by no means a surge of people," Wilkerson said.

"There are some other things at play in the job market aside from wages."

Those who are looking for a job can participate virtually Thursday in the WRAL Capital Area Career Expo.

"We have about 45 employers who are signed up with about 1,500-plus jobs," Wilkerson said.

Job seekers upload a resume and indicate what they are interested in. On Thursday between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., employers will reach out for a text chat or a video interview.

Wilkerson says a quick tech check can ease the process.

"Check your background for when you're talking to the recruiters. Make sure you're dressed appropriately so you can put your best foot forward," she said.

The WRAL Capital Area Workforce Development Career Expo is free and open to anyone, and individuals can inquire about and apply for multiple jobs.
