Step into The Third Place, and you might just encounter a familiar face. David Benson, the coffee shop's current owner, is a man of many talents. Did you know that he's the artist responsible for creating the acorn dropped in Raleigh on New Year's Eve? It's just one example of his creative spirit, and most days you can find him at The Third Place, either causing some friendly trouble or amusing his patrons.

“The Acorn is eight and half feet tall, weighs like 1250 pounds and every year, we lower it downtown. So every year I’m like the king of Raleigh for a day,” Benson said.

A legacy of community and coffee

Established in 1993 by Rich Futrell and Ty and Julie Beddingfield, The Third Place Coffee Shop quickly became a cherished spot for Raleigh residents. Its name is inspired by the concept of the "third place," a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg to describe places where people gather beyond their homes (first place) and workplaces (second place). The Third Place became that vital third space where friendships flourished, ideas flowed and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee permeated the air.

In 2004, David Benson took the reins as the new owner, preserving the coffee shop's legacy while infusing it with his own creative energy. With Benson at the helm, The Third Place continues to thrive as a community hub.

“It’s all in the neighborhood. It’s all the community and that’s what we’re all about,” Benson said.
