Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 20, this year. There are a variety of ways for kids and families to get involved, remember the Civil Rights leader and honor his work through service projects and events in Raleigh, Durham and across the Triangle.

Here's what's happening so far. Stay tuned for potential updates.

Durham

Dream Big Book Drive: Book Harvest, an amazing organization that works to put books in the hands of all kids, will host its big annual event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 20 at Rhythms Live Music Hall, 2020 Chapel Hill Road. Bring your new and gently used children's books (and gather some from friends and neighbors too). Then deliver them at the event.

Raleigh

Community Heroes Day at Marbles: The downtown Raleigh museum will offer activities on Jan. 20. Kids can meet real community heroes, including a paramedic, teacher and police officer. They also can be a hero by packing food for Backpack Buddies and making blankets for Project Linus.

Cary

MLK Dreamfest: The town of Cary hosts a variety of events from Jan. 18 to Jan. 20, including a service project on Jan. 20, a performance best for ages 4 to 10 from award-winning storyteller Willa Brigham on Jan. 18, and a free performance of Amazing Grace, a staged reading of the fantastic picture book by Mary Hoffman.
