Sandy Thompson was shocked to find her late husband’s name misspelled at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley. Now, she is bringing awareness to some other issues she has seen at the park.

Thompson’s husband died in June. The grave wasn’t installed until several weeks ago. The first time she viewed it, she said she noticed the mistake right away.

"I looked at it and it just didn’t look right to me,” she said. "I kept looking at it, and I realized Gordon was [spelled] Gordan. It’s supposed to be Gordon.”

WRAL News reached out to Wayne Memorial Park with Thompson's concerns.

The park responded that documents show Thompson signed off on the gravestone design. Thompson said she did not catch the mistake because she was grieving, but when she brought the error to the property management, she said she was dismissed.

“[It was] probably about two weeks ago," she said. "I could tell by the way he was talking [that] he didn’t care.”

Thompson said these are not the only issues she’s seen at the park. She said she has seen multiple cracked graves on unsteady ground and fire ants all over the property.

“We paid for this area. They are supposed to take care of it,” she said.

WRAL News asked property management about the grave issues. Management said several of the graves have already been filled in and leveled.

It's been less than six months since Thompson's husband died. At the end of the day, she said she just wants the issues fixed.

“You know, that just upset me because you want things to be right," she said. "That’s my husband. You want it to look good."
