Cumberland shelter waives fees all month to find homes for cats and dogs

Cumberland County Animal Services is waiving all adoption fees in August as part of the month-long Clear the Shelters campaign.

The shelter, located at 4704 Corporation Drive in Fayetteville, is often at maximum capacity and has reduced or eliminated pet adoption fees several times in the past year.

"As of this morning, we had 119 dogs and 118 cats in our shelter," director Elaine Smith said on Tuesday. "We struggle, really, through the whole summer with so many cats and dogs coming into our shelter. "

The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Clear the Shelters kicks off

WRAL News is joining NBC stations across the country in promoting adoptions from local animal shelters through the entire month of August. View a list of shelters participating in Clear the Shelters.

Even if you can’t adopt right now, you can help homeless pets. Consult the wishlist for your local shelter to find out what they need most. Donations of cash are always welcome, of course, or you can give of your time.

Alexa Magembe, 12, volunteers with her mother at Cumberland Animal Services. She loves being able to bond with and walk the dogs.

She offered this advice for would-be pet parents: "You've got to look into a dog that's been here for a while, because some of them get overlooked," she said.
