A Cumberland County teacher was charged and arrested for accusations of a sex crime against a child.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the alleged crime committed by Darnell James Tyner, 53, of Fayetteville, did not happen at the school.

Tyner is a fifth-grade teacher at Montclair Elementary. He started on Aug. 17, 2015, according to Cumberland County Schools.

According to the school district, Tyner is suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

“We are deeply concerned about these allegations, which do not reflect the professionalism and integrity of the many premier professionals who work hard on behalf of our students every day,” a statement from the district read. “Our top priority is always our students' and staff's safety and well-being.”

The district said it would cooperate with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office’s investigation.

Authorities arrested Tyner the morning of June 23 at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
