Travelers call for action amid airline delays, cancellations

Airlines are being told to step up after cancellations and delays continue to climb across the country.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has asked airlines to provide food vouchers or hotel stays for delays and cancellations.

For some people the pressure on the airlines could not come soon enough, but some are wondering if asking the airlines to do more will result in changes.

We’ve all seen the fast dash to catch a flight only for it to be grounded, delayed or canceled.

“I flew down to Monterey, Mexico. I was there for a week," said Robert Thomas, a passenger.

Just about everyone at RDU Airport Monday had their own story

"I’m on a flight that was suppose to leave at 3:15. It is not leaving until 8:20," said Pam Burton, passenger.

Many seem to understand that at times weather is a factor, but what happens when there are clear skies and still major delays and people doing overnights at the airport.

That is when Buttigieg said airlines must do more to help passengers. If not, the transportation department could draft new rules for the airlines.

WRAL News reached out to the major airlines to see if there are changes in the works.

These passengers said they are expecting more from the major airline carriers.

"We pay a good price we plan ahead. It takes hours to get there, we pay for parking we take care of our dog and house sit," said another passenger Wendy Washington. "For them to just say 'we are five hours late' that is not good."

Delta issued a statement to WRAL News Monday that read, in part "Delta is focused on strong operational performance, including recovering quickly and resiliently when factors like weather and air traffic control programs affect our operation."

Some passengers said they are hoping airlines are getting the message.
