The North Carolina Courage will continue the preliminary round of the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup against the Chicago Red Stars at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah this Sunday, July 5 at 12:30 p.m. EST. The Courage look to earn their third win in the Challenge Cup preliminary round to remain in first place.
Most recently, the Courage defeated the Washington Spirit 2-0 behind an outstanding performance from Lynn Williams, who scored two goals in the match. With three goals scored in the tournament thus far, Williams boasts the highest number of goals scored by a single player in the Challenge Cup following her performance against the Spirit. With two wins and six points, the Courage sit atop the Challenge Cup standings.
The Chicago Red Stars faced Portland Thorns FC on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in a scoreless draw. The Red Stars are currently tied for 7th place in the Challenge Cup standings.
In the last meeting between the two teams, the Courage defeated the Red Stars 4-0 in the NWSL Championship game. Debinha struck first, receiving a cross from Jessica McDonald and scoring to give the Courage an early advantage. McDonald scored a goal of her own in the 26th minute, followed by goals from Crystal Dunn and Sam Mewis to seal the dominant victory and second championship title in Courage history.
