Residents watch online, at home as Wake Forest puts on fireworks display
The coronavirus pandemic has made celebrating the Fourth of July tricky this weekend.
Many towns and cities have canceled parades, festivities and the biggest thrill of them all ... fireworks. The Town of Wake Forest held its annual fireworks show Friday but with a unique and socially distanced way to watch.
People were encouraged to watch Friday night's fireworks (the show began at 9:30 p.m.) on the town's Facebook page. The event was staged at Heritage High School, but no guests were allowed. Parking was also not allowed along the streets and greenways surrounding the high school. Nearby sections of the greenway were also be closed along with Foundation Drive.
So while you couldn't see the show in person, officials said you could still get the best seat in the house right in front of your computer or TV.
“It was especially important for us to provide the fireworks show this year in some form or fashion,” said Mayor Vivian Jones in a press release that announced the event. “Considering all the programs and events that have been canceled due to COVID-19, we wanted to offer a way for our community to celebrate this special holiday.
“Although we would prefer to gather in person with family and friends as we normally do to enjoy the fireworks show, the virtual option will allow us to enjoy the display while helping ensure the health and safety of our community."
The town shared on its Facebook page an Independence Day message featuring Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty and the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners. If you missed it, the entire program will be rebroadcast on WFTV 10 (Spectrum channel 10) and the town’s website at wakeforestnc.gov.
