Nearly 2,000 patients' medical records breached

Hospital administrators are reporting a breach of close to 2,000 patient medical records within the Cape Fear Valley Health System.

Officials with the Cape Fear Valley Health System said the breach of information impacts hospitals in all three counties within the system.

The system includes hospitals like Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, Bladen County Hospital, Hoke Hospital, Central Harnett Hospital, Betsy Johnson Hospital and others, along with multiple outpatient centers.

Administrators said the data breach impacted 1,943 patients within the Cape Fear Valley Health System. Some of the information that was collected included patients' names, addresses, dates of birth, diagnoses and other private information.

Hospital administrators said the breach did not occur in the hospital's computing system but at Westat, a third-party company that handles the hospital's data.

Patients impacted by the breach should receive a letter in the mail from Cape Fear Valley Health System.

A spokesperson from Westat did not believe any of the information collected during the breach was misused, but impacted patients should remain vigilant.

The breaches occurred between February 2022 and May 2023. The was also one breach of information in August 2021.

The hospital system said Westat has taken steps to make sure this doesn't happen again.
