A Clayton man has been arrested after a shooting and assault that happened Friday in Knightdale.

Around 5 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at Sports Page Bar at 835 N. Smithfield Road. Officers found one person shot and two others assaulted from circumstances stemming from the incident, which occurred on the sidewalk in front of the bar.

The victim who had been shot was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.

The two individuals who were assaulted during the incident were treated for minor injuries on the scene and released.

Knightdale Police Captain Danny Phillips said investigators were dealing with two crime scenes related to the shooting. Phillips also said one arrest had been made in the incident, and investigators were in the process of identifying others involved.

Tyler Squirewell, 29, of Clayton, was arrested and charged with one count of assault inflicting serious injury.

WRAL News spoke with a woman named Kimberly, who was nearby when the shooting happened.

"It's unnerving. I have grandbabies and two grown children who are out there that are married and living life right now," Kimberly said. "Not a day doesn't go by that you don't worry anymore."

Kimberly said she observed the police searching through trash cans and picking up evidence.

"I feel like we need a bigger police presence in some of these shopping centers," Kimberly said. "I mean we actively see things go on in this parking lot and we've had to call them out this before for some things that were not on the up and up."

This is an ongoing investigation. Police said there was no ongoing danger to the community.

Anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the shooting, or may have information about those involved, is asked to call the Knightdale Police Department.
