Charred SUV behind Athens Drive High School prompts arson investigation

A charred SUV in an isolated field behind Athens Drive High School on Thursday prompted a police response.

Sky 5 flew over a field behind the school before 1:45 p.m., where investigators surrounded a scorched SUV beside mounds of mulch.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, an arson investigation is underway.

That SUV was hauled away from the scene several hours later.

Police told WRAL News no one was inside the SUV, which was too badly charred to determine the make and model.

The Raleigh Police Department said they received a call about the SUV around 11 a.m.

WRAL News is working to learn how the SUV got there and whether it was involved in a crime.
