Fellows finish up their work in the WRAL newsroom.

The Capitol Women's Network and Capitol Broadcasting Company are teaming up with TechGirlz to host a free TechGirlz workshop that's all about newsroom production.

The free session, designed for girls who are rising sixth graders to eighth graders, will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 9, at WRAL-TV on Western Boulevard in Raleigh. Registration is open now.

During the workshop, girls will have an opportunity to hear from a panel of women in different positions at CBC and tour the newsroom. They'll also learn how to produce great stories in the same way that collaborative newsrooms work with pre-production, production, and post-production. Using mobile devices, students will learn techniques to produce photo and video content.

I've written about TechGirlz before. The nonprofit based in Philadelphia runs free technology workshops for middle school girls to encourage them to pursue science, technology, engineering and math educations and, eventually, careers. Deirdre Clarke, a mom of three who has worked in the the tech field her entire career, brought the nonprofit to the Triangle when she moved to Cary several years ago.

Participants in the Aug. 9 workshop should bring a camera or camera phone if they have one. Snacks will be provided.

You can find out more information about the session and register on TechGirlz' website.
