Body found in Neuse River in Smithfield

A body was found in the Neuse River in Johnston County Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said that a Department of Transportation worker reported seeing the body in the river at about 2:30 p.m. near South Bright Leaf Boulevard and called 911.

Smithfield police and fire personnel recovered the body, which was sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities did not say if the incident was related to Tuesday’s flooding.
