Benson police said a teen who said he was hit in a drive-by shooting later admitted he made the story up.

Police responded to the area of South Market Street and Chicopee Road in Benson on Saturday around 2 p.m. They found a 15-year-old teen boy with an apparent gunshot wound to the lower right leg. The victim told officers he was shot at and wounded by unknown subjects in a passing vehicle. The victim was transported to a hospital in Wake County for treatment.

Officials continued to investigate and the shooting victim later admitted his injury occurred at a residence located at a nearby mobile home park. He said he and a friend were look and handling a firearm when he was shot. Benson police investigators have interviewed the victim and his parent and have also spoken to the alleged shooter. Officials determined the shooting was an accident.

The investigation is still in progress, but there is no indication at this time of any threat to public safety.
