Former Enloe High School principal George Kadhy died Friday just weeks before his 102nd birthday.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the George A. Kahdy Enloe High School Alumni Scholarship Endowment.

WRAL News featured Kadhy, the principal of Enloe when the school opened in 1962, when he took the stage to greet teachers going back to school in August.

Kahdy served in World War 2 as an Air Force pilot. He was a teacher, a principal, area superintendent, DPI director of Special Education, Assistant State Superintendent, an educational advisor to governors Jim Hunt and Jim Martin and he started the North Carolina School of Math and Science.

He has the distinction of opening the first desegregated high school in the state, which was Enloe.

"I’m very proud of this school. I love this school. I think the teachers here do a magnificent job," he said when he spoke at Enloe in August.
