Woman describes terrifying experience of delivery driver sexually assaulting her

A Fayetteville woman says she was raped by the person who delivered her groceries through Instacart late last month.

The 48-year-old woman, who did not want to be identified, said the person came to her door on the third floor.

The man dropped off her groceries and said he'd 'be right back.'

"I assumed he'd have more groceries for me," she said.

But the man returned to her door empty-handed, then entered her apartment unit and raped her.

"Fifteen minutes later, my door's being broken into, and I was sexually assaulted – raped," she said. "He knocked. I opened the door and then he pushed himself in. I was taken to my couch and sexually assaulted."

She said she blacked out, and as soon as she realized what had happened, she called an ambulance.

She called the police and did rape test kit. She shared a police incident report and lab results that show the incident classified as a "sexual assault."

She says she called her mom to pick her up, and she came home to find a condom wrapper in her bathroom.

"I realized a lot of things were off that I didn't notice," she said.

She believes the man has called her several times, and she's working with police to have her phone searched to find out.

Now, she says she's traumatized, and she's warning women to be careful and watch for red flags.

"I feel diseased. I haven’t taken enough baths that I can get the filth off of me," she said. "Nothing like this has ever happened to me. I've never felt threatened, so I didn't know. I want women to be more careful, especially if you're single."

This man has delivered groceries to her multiple times

She says she's seen this man multiple times over the past year and never had a problem with him previously.

"He’s never given me a problem. I've never had an issue with him. He drops off my stuff," she said. "He's always been nice. A nice, younger guy."

She says he had recently asked her if she was single.

While he delivered to her multiple times, she did say he wasn't the same person associated with the Instacart account he used.

Instacart is working with police

An Instacart representative told WRAL News that the company has been in touch with the woman and with police.

"Our hearts are with the survivor of this horrific crime. We are cooperating closely with the Fayetteville Police Department, which is currently investigating the assault, and have suspended the associated shopper account. We are also in direct contact with the survivor to offer support and resources during this incredibly difficult time," said Instacart in a statement.

Instacart said that all prospective shoppers must complete a background check that includes a review of federal, state and country criminal records, the national sex registry and motor vehicle checks. Anyone convicted of a felony or violent crimes and any registered sex offenders are not allowed to become shoppers for Instacart, the company says.
