RDU launches new flights, hires TSA agents ahead of busy travel season

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is seeing tremendous growth in passenger demand, and new flights are coming on board to provide more options for getting away and getting business done.

The airport continues to outpace last year’s passenger traffic. In January, it saw a 39% jump. Spring and summer travel is just around the corner, and RDU officials are gearing up for a robust season.

Terminal 1 has welcomed some new airlines within the past year, helping the airport meet the increasing demand for travel. Just last month, Avelo Airlines launched six direct flights from RDU.

On Wednesday, the airline announced new routes – Memphis, Tennessee (MEM); Manchester, New Hampshire / Boston (MHT), and Rochester, New York (ROC). Memphis and Rochester service will begin on June 14, and Manchester service will begin June 21. All three routes will operate twice weekly, with one-way fares as cheap as $39.

The destinations are strategically picked to serve both pleasure and business travel and freight customers.

"Looking at companies like Fidelity, FedEx, Autozone and more, we know that those in the Triangle region have the need to visit Memphis, Rochester and Manchester," said Vickey Stennes, vice president of customer experience and people for Avelo.

The low-cost airline's additional flights offer businesses the ability to avoid larger airports and tap into the convenience of RDU, she said.

New flights mean new jobs, discounts for NC State, ECU alumni

Avelo has already opened a base at RDU and created at least 50 jobs. The additions will bring the number of nonstop destinations from RDU to 10.

"With these new routes, we obviously need more aircraft and crew members," said Stennes. "We'll be adding more jobs and hiring an additional 35 crew members, in addition to the crew members we currently have here.

The airline is offering additional exclusive deals for fans of North Carolina State and East Carolina universities.

"Wolfpack and Pirate students, fans and alumni can win Avelo tickets, receive exclusive promotional codes, and more across the entire sporting event spectrum," Stennes said.
