Authorities: Kinston man arrested, charged with child abuse after child dies

A preschool-aged child has died and a Kinston man is in jail Monday night

According to authorities, Lenoir County dispatched EMS personal just before 7 a.m. to a medical call on the 700 block of Garland Avenue in Kinston.

Despite lifesaving efforts from EMS, the Sandy Bottom Volunteer Fire Department and the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office, the child died at the scene. Two additional young children were transported to UNC Lenoir Health Care for evaluation and treatment.

Chason Walker, 28, of Kinston, was arrested and charge with three counts of felony child abuse and/or neglect. Walker was placed in the Lenoir County Jail under a secured bond for the charges, in addition to an outstanding warrant for felony larceny.

The investigation will continue pending the outcome of findings from the Office of the State Medical Examiner, according to authorities.

Investigators from the Lenoir County Department of Social Services also responded to begin a parallel investigation.
