The Apex Police Department is working to draw attention to the critical importance of safe driving in school zones.

The event is in response to concerns raised by staff at Scotts Ridge Elementary School on Apex Barbecue Road saying they've had problems with drivers speeding through the school zone – even driving through the crosswalk when the crossing guard is actively on duty. It also comes several months after a 10-year-old boy was hit by a driver and killed while riding a scooter through his neighborhood.

In response, police are hosting Operation Safe Zone on Monday morning at the Scotts Ridge campus on Apex Barbecue Road from 8:20 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

Police officers will be distributing signs to help draw attention to the importance of safe driving in Apex school zones.

Scotts Ridge says they are working with the Apex Police Department to increase awareness about their school zone and improve the safety for their students, families and crossing guard.

Organizers are encouraging the community to show up!
