Town of Apex holds candlelight vigil for victims of double shooting

People living in Apex gathered Monday to hold a candlelight vigil, honoring two women who were shot and killed there earlier this month.

The Town will light the water tower on Hunter Street purple, once again, to show that symbolic color of healing for the family and the entire community of Apex.

Mayor Jacques Gilbert said the community wanted to support these families after this tragedy.

69-year-old Nancy Taylor and 37-year-old Gabrielle Raymond were gunned down in their neighborhood. The suspect, Harry Hardman, lived in the same community as the women who were killed.

Residents who knew the two women spoke and shared stories of their interactions with them.

"[Nancy] loved getting to know her neighbors [and] lending a hand," one resident said. "Kids referred to her as grandma."

Gilbert said Monday night’s vigil was organized by the police department. The mayor, Police Chief Jason Armstrong and a spokesperson from both families will share remarks. Following their remarks, the community will light the candles together.

"I want everyone to understand that this family is really challenged with this moment in time," he said. "So we have to surround them with our love and support. And that's what we'll continue to do and really illuminate the love and also the impact that they had in our community."

The vigil began around 5:15 p.m. and ended 30 minutes later. Many residents stayed out after the ending to pay their respects for the two women.

Hardman will be back in court Feb. 5.
