American journalist Grant Wahl dies at World Cup match in Qatar after collapsing

Grant Wahl, a prominent American journalist, collapsed during a quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

Wahl was an influential sports journalist who covered American soccer. He worked for Sports Illustrated for more than 20 years, since 1996.

"He was somebody who always wanted the game to be better and he wanted to root out corruption," said Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation.

Wahl made headlines in November by reporting he was detained and briefly refused entry to the World Cup because he was wearing a shirt showing support of LGBTQ rights. FIFA apologized to the journalist after it happened.

His cause of death remains unclear.
