Artificial intelligence gun detection system helps ID shooters, weapons in active shooter situations

In an active shooter situation, identifying a gunman as quickly as possible is important.

An artificial intelligence program is helping law enforcement officers do just that.

Foxhole Consulting CEO Malcolm Lewis is a former paratrooper. His veteran-owned company based in Fuquay-Varina installs the Omilert A-I Gun Detection System. School systems and businesses across the county as using the system. Experts say in an active shooter situation, seconds can save lives.

"This AI gun detection system, it will identify a weapon in two seconds, between two and five seconds,” Lewis said. “[It will] notify law enforcement, EMT and all emergency crews ... SROs [school resource officers] on the grounds for schools."

Lewis said the system works with existing security cameras. It follows the intruder from place to place.

"Once it picks it up on the first camera, it transfers it to where that person is going,” Lewis said. “So, it's always going to be some kind of camera coverage."

The system can identify a handgun or a long-gun like an AR-15. It also knows the difference between a weapon and an object being held like a cell phone.

Lewis said if the object is just a regular object, like a phone, it indicates a green square.

“With a weapon, when it's identified as a weapon, it becomes a red square,” Lewis said.

Several companies in Fayetteville and central North Carolina are considering adding the Omilert A-I Gun Detection System to their existing video security systems. Visit Foxhole Consulting’s website for more information about the AI gun detection system.
