North Carolina will hold a statewide primary election along with 14 others states and the territory of American Samoa on March 5. Early voting in North Carolina begins Feb. 15.

What is Super Tuesday?

Super Tuesday is the day in the presidential primary cycle when the most states vote. In 2024, those states are: North Carolina, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.

One territory, American Samoa, will also vote.

The term “Super Tuesday” has existed since the 1970s, but in its early days it was sometimes used to refer to the last big collection of primaries, not the first, according to the National Constitution Center. Its modern usage was cemented in the 1980s, as states moved their primaries earlier on the calendar to try to increase their influence.

When is Super Tuesday?

In 2024, Super Tuesday takes place on March 5.

Super Tuesday is occasionally in February but usually in March. Because it is one of the first primary days after those in the designated early-voting states, such as Iowa and New Hampshire, its timing depends on the timing of those states.

Why is Super Tuesday important?

It is common for one-third of all delegates to the Republican or Democratic conventions to be awarded on Super Tuesday. By the time Super Tuesday 2024 is over, 1,151 of the total will have been allocated this primary season.
